Your Cover aims to offer you insurance cover that is flexible enough for you to be able to shape it to fit your own needs and lifestyle.

If you or members of your family are keen sports participants, you may well have expensive sports equipment and you should think about these when selecting the various different cover options from Your Cover.

What kind of insurance covers sports equipment?

Sports equipment will be classed as Personal possessions and so including the Personal possessions insurance option in your cover may be an appropriate option.

This cover includes items such as rackets, clubs and bats.

Items of sporting equipment such as rowing machines, table-tennis tables or exercise bikes, which remain in the home - rather like an item of furniture - form part of your Contents cover.

Specifying valuable sports equipment

Sports equipment can be extremely valuable. The cost of a single pair of skis, a set of golf clubs or scuba diving equipment can reach four figures. For serious sports lovers, of course, that’s just the beginning, and the sporting equipment you own can easily be worth thousands of pounds in total.

Whether you think it falls under our Sports equipment as part of Personal possessions or Contents insurance, if you have valuable sporting equipment you should declare it as a named item when arranging Your Cover. That way we have a record of its existence and specification, and so can deal with any claim you may make swiftly and efficiently.

Holidays and sporting trips

You may like to take your sports equipment with you when you go on holiday, and may also take trips specifically for sporting purposes. While your travel insurance may cover you for damage to your baggage in transit, it may be insufficient to cover a racing bike, skis or scuba diving equipment. Your Cover’s sports equipment under Personal possessions cover may provide greater reassurance when you are travelling with sports equipment.

You should consider:

  • Loss of or damage to your sporting equipment in transit. Sporting equipment can be surprisingly delicate, and is very often of irregular shape (as opposed to suitcases, for instance). This increases the risk of accidental damage while being moved or stowed
  • Theft while abroad. Holiday accommodation is likely to be somewhat less secure than your own home, and may lack the facility for you to store sports equipment indoors. Local thieves also know that you will be leaving for home within a few days
  • Strapping equipment to cars. Bikes, sailboards and water skis may all end up travelling on a roof rack or special carrying rack. Even when properly secured, they can suffer damage in transit or theft while you are parked up
Sporting cover elsewhere on your insurance

Your Cover provides the flexibility for you to be able to shape it to fit your own needs and lifestyle and so helping to avoid being over-insured, so check other relevant Your Cover components before adding the Sports equipment option.

Protecting your sports equipment from damage

Wind, water, sun and dirt can all exact a heavy toll on sporting equipment. After participating in your sport, it’s always worth cleaning your equipment carefully, and storing it safely away, especially if it may be some time until you use it again.

This is even more the case at the end of a sporting season, such as skiing or fishing, when it may be months or years before it is again required.

Not only does this keep your equipment in optimum condition for the next time you need it, but also helps protect it from accidental damage.

Changing needs

It is worth reviewing the value of your sports equipment regularly, as your needs are likely to change over time. For instance, you may stop participating in a certain sport, sell your equipment and wish to  remove it from your own personalised Your Cover insurance policy. On the other hand, you may finally decide to replace the golf clubs you bought a decade ago with the set of your dreams, and wish to increase your cover to reflect your investment.

As a policyholder, you can increase or decrease cover, or add or remove items completely, with one simple call to our UK customer centre on 0844 209 0841.
