DVLA medical conditions

Your own wellbeing, as well as that of your passengers and of other road users, means that you must tell the Driver and Vehicle Licensing Agency if you have had, develop, or experience a change to a medical condition that affects your ability to drive safely.

Many drivers carry on with their lives so effectively with a medical condition or disability that they forget that its existence should be reported to the DVLA. It is, however, a criminal offence punishable with a fine of up to £1,000 to fail to tell the DVLA about a relevant condition. It may also, of course, invalidate your car insurance which is why it would be remiss of us at Your Cover not to remind you. The existence of a medical condition does not mean that the DVLA will restrict your licence.

The DVLA maintains responsibility for ensuring that all drivers are in a suitable state of health to safely take control of a car. If you have any questions or concerns about your eligibility to drive due to a past or present medical condition or disability, the definitive resource for information is the Medical rules for drivers page on the DVLA website.

Conditions you must report

The DVLA publishes an ‘At a glance’ guide that describes the current medical standards of fitness to drive. This covers a wide range of disabilities and medical conditions and makes it easy to look up your own condition and decide whether you need to take action. You can download the DVLA ‘at a glance’ guide from their website.

As an initial check, you must tell the DVLA if you have had, or are diagnosed with any of the following:

  • Epilepsy
  • Fits or blackouts
  • Repeated attacks of sudden disabling giddiness
  • Diabetes controlled by insulin
  • Diabetes controlled by tablets
  • An implanted cardiac pacemaker
  • An implanted cardiac defibrillator (ICD)
  • Angina (heart pain) which is easily brought on by driving
  • Persistent alcohol misuse or dependency
  • Persistent drug misuse or dependency
  • Parkinson's disease
  • Narcolepsy or sleep apnoea syndrome
  • Stroke, with any symptoms lasting longer than one month, recurrent 'mini-strokes' or TIAs (Transient Ischaemic Attacks)
  • Any type of brain surgery, severe head injury involving inpatient treatment, or brain tumour
  • Any other chronic neurological condition
  • A serious problem with memory or episodes of confusion
  • Severe learning disability
  • Serious psychiatric illness or mental ill-health
  • Total loss of sight in one eye
  • Any conditions affecting both eyes, or the remaining eye if you have one eye only (not including short or long sight or colour blindness)
  • Any condition affecting your visual field (the surrounding area you can see when looking directly ahead)
  • Any persistent limb problem for which your driving has to be restricted to certain types of vehicles or those with adapted controls
Telling the DVLA

The DVLA publishes a questionnaire for each class of medical condition, such as, for example, Diabetes or Heart Conditions. If you have, or have had, a condition which you think may require reporting, you can browse and download the appropriate form from the Medical Questionnaire page on the Directgov website. It’s the same form whether you already have a licence, or are applying for a new one. When you complete the form, you give the DVLA consent to make enquiries from your doctor about the nature of your condition.

Terms and conditions contained in the policy documentation apply. Download the policy documentation here.
