Being under or over insured

No one likes having to spend their money on car insurance yet you are, of course, legally required to insure your vehicle for at least third party liability, and most drivers consider it wise as a minimum to insure against accidental damage and theft as well.

There are a huge number of additional Car insurance benefits available, however.

At Your Cover, our flexible approach enables you to build your Car insurance policy exactly the way you’d like it. This means you can add in, or leave out, insurance options, and vary the levels of cover that you set, so you end up with a policy that matches your vehicle, the people who’ll be driving it, and the way you plan to use it. Importantly, it means you won’t be paying for cover you don’t actually need.

Why it’s important to avoid under or over insuring

To keep down costs, while it may be tempting to purchase little more than the minimum cover legally required, it can prove costly in the long run. In the event of a claim, if your policy shows that you are not covered for the risk you are claiming against, your claim will not be paid. The implications for this can be very costly indeed.

It is also important that you do not over insure, by paying to cover risks that do not apply to you. This is where Your Cover’s flexible approach to personalising car insurance makes it easy to save money by including those elements of cover you need (at the right level for you), while excluding those you don’t need.

Things you can do to avoid being under or over insured

To avoid buying more cover than you need:

  • Think about who will definitely be driving your car and what you will definitely be using it for and make sure you get the right cover for these circumstances. Remember that at Your Cover, you can change your levels of insurance at any time, without incurring administration charges
  • If you already have breakdown cover through a premium bank account or because you are a member of a roadside assistance service, there’s no point in paying to insure this again although you might consider which provider gives you the best value to see if you can save more money
  • Think about what you would need if your car is stolen or written off. If you have another vehicle, or could get by easily on public transport, it may not be necessary to insure for use of a hire car

To avoid buying more cover than you need:

  • Go through the Your Cover Car insurance options carefully, and add in everything that you feel you should have. As you add or remove insurance options from your policy on our Quote and Buy site, the cost of your premium will update automatically so you can see precisely how much Your Cover will cost
  • If you are unsure about whether to include something, download the full policy document for that component to see precisely what’s covered. If you’re still unsure, call our helpline on 0800 975 3247
  • Don’t forget about No claims discount protection. It’s easy to see this as an ‘extra’, but if you’ve built up a good No claims discount, you might want to protect yourself from losing a significant financial benefit if you have to make a claim.
  • Think about Legal expenses. Again, it’s easy to think of this as an ‘extra’ that adds a little to your premium, but you might consider that the legal protection it would give you in the event of a dispute over an accident you were involved in, but which was not your fault, makes it worthwhile
  • If you plan to drive into Europe, you may want to add Foreign travel insurance. This will extend the cover you have at home to cover you for up to 90 days driving in Europe
  • Think ahead, and decide what you would really require in terms of a replacement vehicle if your own car was stolen or damaged in an accident. When you include Your Cover’s Car hire component, you can choose either a standard small hatchback, or upgrade so that you would get a car of the same type, seating capacity and similar engine size to your own
