Selecting the right ‘class of use’

Your Cover lets you put together insurance that fits your personal needs and circumstances.

One of the major benefits of this is that you pay only for the protection you need, and avoid paying for ‘bundled in’ items of cover you don’t need. ‘Class of use’ is the term insurers use to describe the kind of driving you plan to use your car for. Making sure you tell us the right class of use when you request a quote is important, because it is another way of ensuring your policy fits your circumstances, and you’re not paying for cover you don’t need.

Why class of use matters

Say you only ever use your car to visit friends, go shopping or go on holiday. You would select the Social domestic and pleasure (SD&P) class of use when filling out the Your Cover quote request and, when we work out your quote, we would base the price on the risk of anything happening to you during these kind of journeys.

If, however, you drove yourself to work every day and back in the rush hour, then you would need to choose Social domestic and pleasure including commuting.

If you or your spouse or civil partner are ever required to use your car to travel from your usual office to another for a meeting or to provide training then this is classed as business use so you would need to select Social domestic and pleasure including business use (insured and spouse or civil partner).

Class by Class

Social, Domestic and Pleasure (SD&P)

With this class of use, you are covered to drive your car for Social, domestic and pleasure use, excluding commuting. This means you can use it to go shopping, collect children from school, visit friends in another part of the country or even go on a motoring holiday. With this class of use, however, you are not covered for driving to the station on your way to work, driving to your workplace itself, or for using the car in any other way connected with work.

Social, Domestic, Pleasure and Commuting (SDP&C)

Under this class of use, you can do all of the things you can do under SD&P, but you and anyone else named on your policy can also use the car to drive to and from your normal place of work.

Social, Domestic and Pleasure including Business Use

This covers you and your spouse for all of the uses described above in SD&P, it also, however, allows you to use the vehicle in connection with your job. This might include driving it to visit a customer, or a business meeting but it does not cover you for delivery work of any kind and the business use is restricted to yourself and your spouse or civil partner only.

These are the only classes of business that we offer on Your Cover. We do not offer cover for:

  • Carriage of goods or passengers for hire or reward (courier business)
  • Business use for any driver*
  • Commercial traveling – using the vehicle for door to door sales or traveling sales

All classes of business exclude: competitions, pacemaking, racing, rallies, trials, speed testing, use for motor trade purposes.

* We do not offer any driver cover on Your Cover but you may add up to 5 named drivers to your policy. Please note that if you do add named drivers to your policy any business use is restricted to you and your legally married spouse or the person that you have entered into a legal civil partnership with.

Terms and conditions contained in the policy documentation apply. Download the policy documentation here.
