Add Roof box & trailer cover to your policy

Your Cover Roof box & trailer insurance provides cover enabling you to set off on any trip confident of your position should anything happen to these costly accessories.

Dedicated Roof box & car trailer insurance can prove particularly hard to find and whilst some insurance companies provide third party protection, Your Cover provides insurance for the repair or replacement of your trailer or roof box whether it be stolen or damaged. It doesn’t matter if it’s attached to your car at the time, or whether or not you’re away from home.

Do you have a roof box or trailer?  If you like to load up and get away, taking your creature comforts with you, then Roof box & car trailer insurance may be of value.

If you include this cover, your trailer and/or roof box will be covered against loss or damage throughout the UK and most of Europe, whether or not they are attached to the car.

If you holiday in Europe regularly, you might also be interested in the cover afforded by the Foreign travel option of Your Cover Car insurance.

What’s included and what’s not

Your Cover’s Roof box & trailer insurance pays up to £1,000 towards the cost of repairing or replacing a roof box or trailer owned by you in the event of it being damaged or stolen. This applies whether or not it’s attached to the car at the time, providing the loss or damage occurs within the UK or most other countries in Europe.

If you include this element in Your Cover, we will insure your roof box or trailer:

  • While it’s at your home, either on or off your car
  • Whether it’s attached to your car or not, and whether it’s loaded or empty
  • Throughout the UK and most other countries in Europe (a complete list of countries is available in our policy documentation at the bottom of this section)

You can extend this policy to include the contents you carry in your trailers and roof boxes, by adding the Car contents insurance option into your Car insurance policy.

Roof box & trailer insurance does not cover:

  • Damage caused by wear and tear, including damage to tyres from punctures
  • A trailer weighing more than 1500kg
  • Money, cheques, credit or debit cards, jewellery or any other contents of your trailer or roof box
  • Any damage caused deliberately by you or anyone else insured under this Policy.
  • Yachts, boats, motorbikes or other vehicles carried on a trailer
  • Trailers like mobile canteens, horseboxes or caravans

Please note that, should you need to claim under this cover, your No claims discount will be affected, unless you have No claims discount protection.

Hints & tips for driving safely with your roof boxes and trailers

Your Cover Roof box & trailer insurance gives you the peace of mind of knowing you would be paid for the loss of, or damage to, your roof box or trailer either at home or while you’re on your travels.

Trailers tend not to get the same amount of care and attention as the car that pulls them, these hints & tips should help you enjoy driving when you have a trailer or roof box attached:

  • Ensure the lighting, number plates, brakes, eyeshafts, wheels and tyres, and tow jaws and hooks on your trailer are in good repair, free of corrosion and with all electrics working properly
  • Keep to speed limits at all times. With your trailer attached, the UK limit is 60mph on motorways, 30mph on roads with street lighting, and 50mph on single carriageways
  • Satisfy yourself that your car’s engine, braking system and towing capacity are adequate to deal with your trailer or roof box when loaded; you should be able to check this in your car manual although we found the Specialty Hitch site useful. If you have more than one car, recheck this if you suddenly decide to tow behind an older or less powerful vehicle than the one you usually use
  • Make sure your trailer’s load is evenly distributed, doesn’t project outside of the trailer itself, and is securely tied down
  • Fit towing mirrors if your car’s mirrors do not give you a full view past your trailer
  • Couple and uncouple your trailer carefully, following the correct procedures to ensure alignment and proper engagement
  • Always check that the lid is shut properly before you set off. Always make sure that your roof box is secured in accordance with the assembly instructions
  • Visit the website of The National Trailer and Towing Association, which offers excellent guidance on all aspects of driving with a trailer

When attaching your roof box:

  • Make sure that the roof box is placed centrally on the supports so that the weight of the box is evenly divided
  • Make sure that you can still open the lid of the boot or the hatchback
  • The roof box should be parallel to the road surface so that you do not experience any upward pressure while you are driving
  • The roof box should also be parallel to the sides of the car so that it has a minimum impact on the road holding
  • Remove your roof box from your car between trips and store it safely. The increased drag caused by the box reduces fuel efficiency, costing you money
