Your Cover No claims discount protection helps cushion the blow to your premium that making a claim can have. By protecting your No claims discount, you can make one claim during your policy year without losing the discount you can apply to your subsequent premium when it is calculated at renewal time.

Do you have a claim free history of driving for the past 12 months or more? If so, you should consider what impact making a claim may have to the cost of your car insurance. With No claims discount rising to as much as 70%, by failing to protect it, you could find yourself paying hundreds of pounds more towards your next premium.

By adding No claims discount protection, in the event of a claim, you may also avoid the situation of finding yourself returned to a level of No claims discount you may simply feel to be inappropriate for your experience and driving track record, especially if the claim was unavoidable, no matter how unfair.

What’s included and what’s not  

Your Cover’s No claims discount protection will ensure your premium reflects the No claims discount you have previously amassed when you next obtain a quote, even if you have had to make a claim. Remember, No claims discount protection doesn’t freeze the cost of your premium but only the discount applied to it.

Claims under the following sections do not effect your no claims discount, regardless of whether you have No claims discount protection or not:

  • Claims for glass repairs and for bodywork scratched as a direct result of a damaged window or windscreen providing you have built the Windscreen cover option into the Your Cover Car insurance policy
  • Claims where you (or any driver named on your policy) are not at fault, providing we have been able to recover everything that we have paid out from those who are responsible
How No claims discount protection affects your No claims discount  

By adding No claims discount protection into your car insurance policy, you can be sure that should you make a single claim in a year, your existing No claims discount will remain unchanged. If you make 2 claims in a year, your No claims discount reduces by 2 years and then 2 years for each additional claim after that.

Why your premium may still increase at renewal, even with No claims discount protection  

No claims discount is a percentage discount applied to the cost of your premium based on the number of years claim free driving you have built up. For example, if you have 5 or more years No claims discount, an insurer may equate this to a 60% reduction.

However, there are a number of instances where your premium may increase or decrease, for example, you may have to make a claim, change your car or move to a new address. In these instances, whilst your discount is protected, the premium it was calculated against may have changed. The table below explains how much you might pay if your premium increased from £300 to £315 whilst your 60% discount remained unchanged.
