Add breakdown cover to your policy

With Your Cover’s Breakdown cover you can build into your Car insurance, the effective and practical assistance and financial cover you would require if your car were to break down in the UK (including the Channel Islands and Isle of Man) or in Europe; or, just as frustratingly, if it were to break down at home.With three different levels of cover to choose from, you can tailor your insurance to suit your own requirement.

Is it for you?

You may like to consider Breakdown cover if you simply require all round cover for the eventualities associated with breaking down in the UK or in Europe. Or you may consider enhancements like assistance outside your own home, or support for getting yourself, your vehicle and your passengers back from Europe following the breakdown of your vehicle, a valuable reassurance.

What’s included and what’s not

Your Cover’s Breakdown and Roadside Assistance option has three levels of cover for you to choose from:

  1. Roadside Breakdown
  2. Roadside Breakdown and Recovery, including Home Assist
  3. European Breakdown and Recovery, including Home Assist

If you choose Roadside Breakdown we will:

  • Provide roadside assistance if you breakdown more than one mile from your home. We will pay for up to 30 minutes working on your vehicle. If it cannot be repaired in this time we will arrange for car, driver and passengers to be taken to the nearest suitable garage;
  • Pass on urgent messages for you advising that you have been delayed;
  • Provide details of a nationwide glass repairer if your windscreen or other glass needs replacing

If you choose Roadside Breakdown and Recovery including Home Assistance, we will:

  • Provide all the benefits listed above under Roadside Breakdown, but with the Breakdown cover extended to include breakdowns at or within a mile of your home;
  • Get you, your car and up to 6 passengers back home (or to another UK address if you wish), should your car break down and remain immobile for more than 4 hours and provided we’ve come out to you and attempted to repair it
  • Arrange for you and up to 6 passengers to travel on to your destination in the UK by rail, pay for overnight bed and breakfast and arrange for a temporary replacement vehicle for up to 2 days, if your car breaks down anywhere in the UK and remains immobile for more than 4 hours, even though we’ve come out to you and attempted to repair it

If you choose European Breakdown and Recovery including Home Assistance, we will:

  • Provide all the benefits listed above under Roadside Breakdown including Home Assistance;
  • Get you and your passengers home, or onwards to your destination, if you break down while driving your car in Europe and we cannot get it repaired within 8 hours. Alternatively, we’ll cover the cost of bed and breakfast accommodation while you wait for your car, or a temporary replacement vehicle, up to a limit of £750;
  • Return your car to an authorized repairer back in the UK if you break down in Europe and repairs would take longer than 5 days;
  • Pay for you or someone else to go back to collect your car if the time taken to repair it means that you have to leave it in Europe at the end of your visit.

We must point out that, in extreme weather conditions, it can become impossible to reach and effect repairs at the scene of a breakdown within normal times. When this happens, our immediate priority is to move you and your passengers to a place of safety, after which we can recover your car once conditions improve.

Enjoying trouble-free motoring

Your Cover Breakdown and Roadside Assistance cover gives you practical support and meets the costs of dealing with a wide array of circumstances you might encounter should you break down or be involved in an accident at home, around the UK (including the Channel Islands and Isle of Man) or while driving in Europe.
There are simple checks and precautions; however that can help you avoid inconvenience and disruption to your plans from breakdowns:

  • Maintain your vehicle and any trailers or caravans you may use, regularly and properly. Have services done at prescribed intervals, and check oil, coolants, tyres and condition of your wiper blades regularly. Adjust the pressure of your tyres if you are loading your car heavily to go on holiday;
  • Keep a jack, a groundsheet, and other basic tools for your car in the boot, along with a torch. Even if you are unable to use these yourself, they may help someone else to get you moving again quickly;
  • Carry a reflective warning triangle and reflective jacket in the boot of your car;
  • Keep jump leads in your car;
  • Treat unfavourable weather conditions with extreme caution, and avoid driving in them if possible
