Allianz urges motorists to face up to winter
The last two winters saw roads grind to a halt and car insurance company, Allianz is asking motorists to prepare for the worst the weather can throw at them.
Allianz’s online-only car insurance provider, Your Cover insurance, has put together guidelines and advice on vehicle maintenance and winter driving to improve safety on our treacherous winter roads.
Your Cover's advice is:
▪ Be Prepared - If motorists are forced to drive in hazardous conditions, it is important to be prepared by packing a powerful torch, reflective triangle, first aid kit, bottled water, blankets, snow shovel and jump leads
▪ Tyre Checks - Carry out a visual check on car tyres before starting a journey. They should have a minimum of 3mm tread all round in winter, as this helps the car to disperse the extra water lying on the road
▪ Electrics - Drivers should keep heaters, wipers and any lights that are not absolutely necessary, switched off until the battery has gathered charge. Use the starter in short five-second bursts if the engine doesn't start quickly, leaving thirty seconds between attempts.
▪ Braking - Stopping distances are ten times longer in ice and snow. It is important to keep a sensible distance from the car in front and to brake gently when required. If the car skids, drivers should come off the brake and disengage the clutch
▪ Breaking Down - If a sudden failure of the engine or any other core system, makes the car come to a halt in the road, motorists should switch on hazard lights and place a warning triangle 50 metres back along the road, ahead of the car.
Motorists can find more advice and information on the free Your Cover insurance, iPhone and Android application, Find & Drive. With the use of technology, the app also allows drivers to locate their nearest amenities, including car parks, petrol stations, tyre centres and test stations across the .
Andy James, head of direct, Allianz Retail, said: " Over the last few years, the has experienced severe winter weather conditions that left many roads in dangerous condition.
“We would urge all motorists to follow our advice and make sure they are fully prepared before travelling in such conditions.”
